The further expansion of power generation from wind and solar energy means that strong power grid fluctuations occur more frequently. In combined heat and power plants, thermal storage systems can decouple electricity generation from the demand of district heating customers. This allows the power plants to produce electricity at any time, even when no heat is being supplied to the grid. The thermal energy generated during electricity production is simply stored and used later. In parallel with the expansion of renewable energies, it is therefore important to also continue the expansion of storage facilities, to make use of surpluses from renewable electricity production.
Stadtwerke Frankfurt celebrated the completion of its new thermal storage facility with an impressive laser show inside the storage facility on April 29, 2020. Within just nine months, Kraftanlagen had built the thermal storage facility and a pump building, including the associated piping and plant technology, for Stadtwerke Frankfurt Oder.
