Compensation systems – ensuring power grid stability during the expansion of renewable energies

For effective power transmission with AC voltage, power factor correction is required as a system service. It supports the voltage in the grid when transmitting large amounts of power over long distances. Traditional large-scale power plants, which are now gradually being decommissioned during the energy transition, provide a number of these so-called ancillary services. These are measures that ensure a high level of stability and fault resistance of the power grid. As it becomes apparent that distributed generation plants are increasingly displacing large-scale power plants, alternatives must also be found for providing ancillary services.

One such alternative may be the use of a rotating synchronous condenser plant. This plant acts as a converter of energy, contributing to grid stability and reactive power generation. It thus enables efficient and long-range electricity transports, such as those required to make wind power from northern Germany available to the industry in the south.

As a general contractor, Kraftanlagen Energies & Services undertakes the planning, procurement, manufacture, delivery, erection and commissioning of such compensation systems.

“We are currently contracted by the transmission system operator Amprion to build a dual system with two identical rotating phase shifters with a total reactive effect capacity of -600 MVar voltage increasing and +400 MVar voltage decreasing. For us, this is an important lighthouse project for the successful implementation of the energy transition, which offers great potential for future supply security in Germany.”
