Decentralised power generation, hot water and steam supply

ZDF emergency power system, Mainz

Since it went on the air for the first time on 1 April 1963, ZDF has contributed to making Mainz, the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, known beyond Germany's borders as a "media city". As part of restructuring the medium-voltage distribution, the emergency power system is rebuilt in two construction phases.

In addition to the existing emergency power centre, a new structure was built that was equipped with two diesel engine generator sets with 2,600 kVA and a generator voltage of 10 kV each and commissioned. This self-sufficient supply unit forms the system "Red".

After the disassembly of the old generator sets, the "Blue" part of the plant, which also consists of two diesel generator sets with 2,600 kVA each, is built in the gutted and renovated existing building. The integration of the new emergency power system into the existing infrastructure is done "piece by piece" while maintaining a continuous emergency power supply.
