Philippsburg power plant, block 2: Design, calculation and fabrication of a coring rig for a fuel element

Kraftanlagen Heidelberg was tasked with the design, calculation and fabrication of a fuel element coring rig for Block 2 of the Philippsburg nuclear power plant.

The coring rig was intended for installation in the transport tank JA0510 of reactor building UJA. It was realised as a welded and/or screw-fit design with lateral profiles for support at the tank walls.

The proof of structural stability includes all components and connections required for the direct load application. The horizontal supports were not taken into account. The load cases to be taken into account for normal operation and the effects of earthquakes were part of the calculations.

The scope of services also included the creation of pretest documents with the corresponding calculations, production drawings, weld plans and test sequence plans.

Following the fabrication and installation of the coring rig with the corresponding lifting accessories, the services were approved by the operator and the experts without flaws.
