As a result of the closure of the Westerholt hard coal-fired plant in Gelsenkirchen in 2003, a need of 150 MW of district heating arose. To ensure that peak loads could be covered, shell boilers with a thermal power performance of a total of 156 MW were installed at the location.
Six dual flame pipe boilers generate hot water at an operating temperature of between 90 and 135°C in flow and an operating pressure of approx. 9 bar. The entire plant is safeguarded at a pressure of 18 bar and a temperature of 210 °C. The boiler is fired with EL-type heating oil.
The contract, which was awarded to Kraftanlagen Hamburg, included the execution, detailed and construction engineering, procurement and erection as well as the commissioning and documentation of the steam and generation plant as technical general contractor.
